Even before the beginning of the World Wide Web, I became intrigued by the power of the Internet. Working as a scientific project manager, I was able to make early use of the technology (FTP, e-mail, etc.). At the beginning of the Web I became fascinated with its potential. I joined a small group of like-minded folks to explore the technology, first coding web pages by hand then using the crude HTML editing programs then available. In addition to web site design and development, I administered both Unix servers and NT-based servers. This group became the Internet Services Division at Visualogic, Inc. I worked with this group for four years, becoming the manager of the division, before leaving to establish my own business, Skip Echert Web Associates, in 1999.
My interest in the web is not just from a technical standpoint, but from a business standpoint as well. In addition to scientific degrees, I have a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Pepperdine University. Combining this formal education with my practical business experience gives me an excellent understanding of the ways in which the Web can be put to use.
Creating a site that then can be viewed by people around the world, still gives me a huge charge. Helping people make their sites work much better provides a great feeling of accomplishment.
Life before the Web - I worked as a research scientist, managing other scientists and engineers and participating in oceanographic projects. I was privileged to have been involved in a variety of adventures, accompanied by some great individuals. These projects included:
Dozens of trips to the Bering, Chukchi and Beaufort Seas measuring sea ice and ocean parameters. I spent a total of about 5 months on camps established on drifting pack ice in the Arctic Ocean.
Searching for (and finding) a Spanish galleon in over 3000 m of water.
Diving to install and recover oceanographic instruments in the near shore off North Carolina.
Writing Experience - I have written hundreds of scientific reports for industry and government and have authored or co-authored 7 articles in refereed journals, 20 papers published in conference proceedings, and have presented papers at over a dozen scientific conferences.
